Carlitta Durand, "Nostalgic Nights" EP

Some may remember her as a featured vocalist on a variety of Little Brother/Foreign Exchange projects. She even put out an EP with Vaughn Garcia last year called the "Doug + Pattie EP" that I hear was a lot of fun material (get it here: http://smokingsection.uproxx.com/TSS/2009/12/download-carlitta-durand-vaughn-garcia-present-the-doug-patty-ep). Well, she's now put out her own EP called "Nostalgic Nights". Definitely a talented voice to be reckoned with, keep an eye out for her.

Rapsody, "Honda Accord Music Remix" music video

RAPSODY - HONDA ACCORD MUSIC (REMIX) from Pricefilms on Vimeo.

2nd up for the IWWMG music video blast today is Rapsody's remix for "Honda Accord Music" featuring Skyzoo and Thee Tom Hardy. I was a already a fan of the original but I'm not mad at this remix either. A little more upbeat than the first, all participants represent well. I was watching this vid and it occurred to me that the younger lyricists in 9th's camp have (I wouldn't call it "unusual" but) a different flow. Most youngin's generally bite their older more successful contemporaries (I think for attention or relevance) but these guys seem to flip verbs and cadences a little differently. I think it's fresh and I applaud them and 9th for pushing them to do so because they weren't doing this a little over a year ago, to my recollection. Dope either way...

Heather Victoria, "The Letter" music video

HEATHER VICTORIA ft. SKYZOO - THE LETTER from Pricefilms on Vimeo.

Two new videos from 9th Wonder's IWWMG camp, this one from songstress Heather Victoria featuring Brooklyn MC, Skyzoo on "The Letter". Really loving Kenneth Price's video production and directorship. I honestly think he should get a write-up or an interview of his own because 9th is definitely keeping him busy. They've put out a mass of videos since last spring and as a fan, I'm well pleased with what they're doing. Inspiring work...

New project from Ryan Lucas, "Enlarged Territory"

Ryan Lucas, 1/3rd of DC-based trio, Subwoofer Science (http://subwooferscience.bandcamp.com), in preparation for his solo album release of "Letter from the Chief Musician", has released a compilation of songs entitled "Enlarged Territory". I'm proud to say that all 3 members of the group now have individual releases available showcasing our various talents. One of my favorite joints by Ryan Lucas, "Barato", which has been on our performance set list for a while now, has finally been added to an album as well as the Lucas produced, "Only One", to which I'm a featured lyricist. Other tracks on this project include snippets from songs that he's collaborated with other artists/producers as well as solo-produced/recorded songs that did not make the upcoming album. I'm gonna be banging this for a while until the new album drops and definitely recommend you getting your copy. No excuses, as Ryan has made it available from his Bandcamp site for free. As you listen, it'll become obvious that Ryan's intent with his music is to bless the listener. His lyrics are honest and transparent, you can hear his struggles and triumphs and easily relate to them. But don't get it twisted, your head will be nodding in the process.

DJ Premier presents Year Round Records "Get Used To Us"

Ok, not much to say here other than check out DJ Premier's newest release "Get Used To Us" featuring some dope new and old talent. NYG's, Royce da 5'9", KRSOne, Grand Puba, Teflon, Mc Eiht, Lady of Rage, Styles P, Joel Ortiz, Saigon and Papoose. The lineup is classic and all represent well over his extremely and consistently dope production.

» A Moment With AFTA 1 (pt. 1 & 2)

Anyone that really pays attention to who I recommend for dope production would recognize the name AFTA 1. This video footage was produced around the time of the limited edition cassette tape (I know, right...) release of "FORM". Performance footage and a short interview afterwards. I follow some of his live streaming on UStream as much as possible too. The guy is just inspirational. He's obviously a big proponent of art and I love it. If only I could strive to be just a little more free-form like he is with what he does. Dope music production, dope clothing design, artwork... wow. Making a difference; that's what it's all about.

This will be on Boog's upcoming album, "Light Beers Ahead of You". Video directed by Kenneth Price, who has done pretty much all of the IWWMG's affiliated videos. Great relationship going on there. 9th Wonder is doing some big things.

Flying Lotus & Leigh McCloskey "Inside the Codex"

This is an interview with Leigh McCloskey who did the artwork for Flying Lotus' album, "Cosmogramma". Definitely a dope look into the creative minds behind and the process that spawned the album's artwork. You don't see a lot of expressive art like this in hip hop. I wish there were more. Art is a great medium for expression.

20Syl Making a Beat (Video)

I remember first seeing the name 20Syl as a guest on Mr. J. Medeiros' (of The Procussions) debut solo album "Of Gods and Girls"... didn't think much about it other than the fact that he was an artist from France. Now come to find out, he's a pretty dope producer as well. Check out this video...

Gravity Movement presents "Love Eternal"

This was my first introduction to EROX (who produced "The Genesis") a couple years ago. I remember it wasn't long after we released the Subwoofer Science EP, I was posting links to download it on moovmnt.com on the shout box and saw his post about Love Eternal. I don't always download what people put up there but I took a chance on this one for some reason and I was pleasantly surprised. Was even more surprised that it wasn't featured as one of the site's main blog posts, but that's just the way it goes. Love Eternal got a lot of plays in my iPod. When I was asked to DJ at a couple parties, it got played there too. Had a very refreshing sound to it IMO and the funny thing was, I could've sworn that there were more MC's featured but when I hit him up about it, he said it was all just him on the mic. I was like, "Whoa..."

Next, I had to get that "fresh" lyricism on my "A Wintry Mix" project so he blessed the joint "TheGiftGiver" lovely. Not long after that, he hit us up to do "GRACE" on "The Genesis" project; so it's pretty much been a family affair ever since (though we've yet to meet face-to-face yet)... LOL. Now I'm trying to get something else popping off with him while he starts work on his newest beat project, "Foreign Soil". I can tell just by the concept alone that this next one will be a really dope project... E's going international with this one. I'm looking forward to it.

So anyway, I just wanted to tell y'all how I came to know and become friends with EROX. The project that started it all for me... LOL; "Love Eternal". Dope stuff. Get it and while you're at it, check out his earlier material, Magnum Opus Vol 1 & 2.

Gravity Movement presents "The Genesis"

My man, EROX, producer/MC from Raleigh, NC, put out an instrumental project called "The Genesis" earlier this year, chock full of driving kicks and heavy basslines over dope sample chops. It's been getting a lot of love on the blogosphere and I'm honored that Subwoofer Science could take part in the success. We were featured on the song "GRACE". To this day, I still want to do a music video for it because it's a really dope cut. I've been telling E and Sha Prince (who was featured on probably the dopest cut on the album, "MOS HIGH") that they need to do a music video for that joint as well. Very Premo-ish, which is probably why it's my favorite. Our joint wasn't wack either; very 9th-ish (reminds me of his production style around the time of "The Listening" a little bit). To this day, I'm still playing our joint back to back.

Here's EROX's description:
"This project was inspired by changes in my life. From building a better relationship with Christ, a better relationship with my wife, to the birth of my son. Also, many people complain about the state of Hip Hop, but rarely do anything about it. I've chosen to use the GIFT that God has given me to create something that I hope moves you, inspires you and most importantly motivate you to take a look at the GIFTS God has given you and how great he is! "

1982 (Termanalogy & Statik Selectah "The EP (FreEP)"

I've seen the name Termanalogy on a rack of releases these past couple years, esp his work with Premo. He's a dope MC. But I hadn't heard much about Statik Selektah aside from a few cuts here and there. I know he's a ground-breaking DJ and very well known but other than that, I hadn't checked for him much.

Then I heard about 1982, the collaboration of Termanalogy and Statik Selektah. I downloaded their FreEP and found myself getting nostalgic over the beats and wordplay. There are featured artists but since I'm not super familiar with any of them, overall the project is really dope. If you like that classic golden era sound, some great sample chops and unique rhythms, definitely cop these projects. The EP is available for free but is just a taste of what you can get on the album. I definitely recommend getting this.

klipm0de, "Episodes"

Ok, I've known about the Klipm0de Krew for all of about 2-3 years and I'm telling you, this crew paints audibly. Made up of mndsgn, devonwho, Suzi Analog, knxl3dg3, they all offer a different take on production styles in hip hop and electronic music. You can hear the Dilla influence, you can hear the Madlib, you can hear DJ Premier too. But they've managed to set their own standard in production and what's great is they all while vaguely similar, have their own flavors (shameless plug: one of the things I like about my own crew, Subwoofer Science... LOL).

With this release, "Episodes", mndsgn and Devonwho offer a 29 track deep package of pounding for those that like miniscule sample chops, electronic sound vibrations and hard-hitting drum kits... most of them will journey you out into space (something I have always favored in beat production) but there are others that are easier to take. I'm a fan of production and extensive use of technology and that's what I've come to expect when I hear of anything being released by Klipm0de. Sounds like a bunch of techies geeking over freaking the mess out of some kick and snare on Ableton Live (which I believe I heard them say they use in a podcast interview). Kudos to them. Keep it coming.

You can learn more about the Klipm0de Krew at http://www.klipmode.com. For now, I recommend downloading this new project and working your way backwards. LOL, it's a lot to take in but it's extremely dope. I'm all for the techies and geeks, man. Time out for the thugs just acting their way up to a record deal (gimmicks) and ruining the industry for everybody else once they get it.

Keziah, "Keziah EP"

I've been following Philly MC/producer Hezekiah for a while now, since his album, "Hurry Up & Wait" dropped... heck, maybe even slightly before that. I think I was introduced to him by Beat Society, since he was a part of that early producer movement (what happened to that anyway?). I know he's got a new project coming out called "Conscious Porn" and has some pretty scandalous cover art (I'm not sure if it's been released yet but I will check) but the other day, his sister Keziah, who's a lyricist herself, released an EP. It features production from some of my favorite producers, her brother the aforementioned Hezekiah, DMV's Oddisee and Jersey's !llmind as well as Street Orchestra and J. Fish. 7 tracks deep, the project is short, sweet and to the point... well, the whole sweet thing is up for question cuz she hits those bars pretty hard. Definitely not a lyricist to be slept on, Keziah can hold her own on the mic. The return of female MC's is definitely upon us and I hope the industry is taking notice. There are a slew of female MC's that aren't hypersexualized models vying for attention, just sensible Masters of the Ceremony in their own right. Hey, I'm all for it. Balance it out. Set the trend. Keep it moving.

Astronote, "AstroNoMix"

I think it's great when producers take their own initiative and put out projects that allow them to exercise their gifts and get people to get a feel for their sound. Why do we have to wait for artists to call us in order to be heard. I first heard about France's Astronote on "The Remixes Vol. 1" and honestly, it didn't sink with me. Hey, nothing wrong with that at all, everybody's got opinions. Not saying it wasn't good, I just wasn't feeling it; it's cool... but I didn't write the name off either.

Now he's released another slew of remixes and album cuts that he's produced for some really dope artists on a project called "AstroNoMix". With this free download, you get a few remixes of commercial artists blended with a bunch of underground talent, who I think capture or at least work better with Astronote's sound much better. Yeah, it's an opinion. Either way, definitely check this project out. Hey, sometimes it takes a few listens to allow an artist to grow on you. I remember back in the day when I was all up on the smooth production (a'la Pete Rock, DJ Premier, The Roots, etc) and my cousin, Boom88, introduced me to Company Flow. It took me a few listens to really soak in the sound but I haven't been the same ever since. Maybe I should revisit Astronote's "The Remixes Vol. 1" to see if I was mistaken.

Versis, "iLLCANDESCENT"

A couple of years ago, while visiting moovmnt.com (a music blog that I frequent), I heard about a beat project by a producer that goes by the name, fLako. I forget where he's from but his project "First Spacesh** on the Moon (Beattape)" had a profound impact on me. I've always been a fan of soulful production, especially in hip hop. Anybody that can chop samples and be able to create a work of art that conveys something that just about everybody can relate to on a personal level and still have that mandated "knock" to keep the heads nodding, well... I'm a fan. Such has been the case with fLako. Now anytime his name is mentioned, I'm checking it out; that's just how it goes in music.

Enter Versis, a young MC (and I mean, young; like in his late teens/early twenties) from the West Coast who embodies the flow and persona of someone who would've been rhyming on the East Coast in the early- to mid-90's. I don't know much about his upbringing, how he got into music and began figuring out his preference but I know that he's been able to surround himself with some extremely dope producers, from L.A. and elsewhere, and the stuff that they have created has been truly dope. A lot of us older folk that were growing up during the "golden era" of hip hop when there was so much great music being put out, typically scoff at what the younger generation has managed to do with the music. We know it's not their fault. Yes, the demand for the sound has changed (based on whose demand is the question), it's not as serious, gimmicks are now the norm, rappers are signed actors basically... ok, I get that. But when you come across a young guy who somehow embodies everything about the golden era and represents that type of thinking and preference for the now, you start thinking you've found something special. Truth is, there are more talented 'kids' out there just like this one, but the music industry would have you thinking that they're not around. That's why it is important for any individual who's passionate about music, to be proactive with searching and finding new talent, new material. Otherwise, you'll be no better than those that just turn on the radio and allow the business model for success to define what a true talent is.

I said all that and didn't get around to really saying much about Versis. It was through his use of some of fLako's instrumentals that I found out about this lyricist. Then come to find out on this album, "iLLCANDESCENT", a play on the word "incandescent" meaning "emitting light as a result of being heated", has production by two other names that I'm a big fan of... Exile and Dibia$e, both from L.A. So it's safe to say, don't sleep on the L.A. music scene. The West Coast still has a whole lot to offer for those of us that like good music. Heck, if Dilla chose to go West before it was his time to go, we can all give it a chance.

Look; I'm a say this, Versis is dope. His album is dope, the producers on his album are dope. What they've created is dope. So if you say you love good hip hop and want to find a way to bring some of that golden era sensibility to this day and age, support this youngin'...

Bullets Over Romance "Jukin"

Subwoofer Science's Boom88 has a side project with singer Eric Brookins, who was featured on "Afros N Twists" on the Subwoofer Science EP. Their sound has been described as "alt(ernative) soul" by DC music/culture blog, The Couch Sessions. More than a year ago, Boom began deeply studying all types of blues music, it's nuances, various styles, how and why the blues artists wrote and sang the way they did, etc. Now Bullets Over Romance have released this experimental blues fusion project that incorporates traditional blues guitar riffs and songwriting over modern drum kits.

Features Ryan Lucas on "Another Golden Day" and myself on the EP's intro.

I think their description of the project puts it best:
"We take traditional Delta Blues and imagine what Robert Johnson and Son House would have made if they had samplers and synths back in the 1930's."

Subwoofer Science collabs: FlamesYall

Over the past year or so, Ryan Lucas has done a number of various collaborations for producers in and outside the DMV (DC/MD/VA area) and even outside the country. He hooked up with London UK producer FlamesYall to contribute vocals to several tracks on some of his projects. Ryan was a featured lyricist on "Featurin'..." which also featured a number of other MC's that FlamesYall had worked with. FlamesYall has a growing discography as he keeps putting out more and more material. Through that connection, we were able to be featured on several different tracks on FlamesYall's ATCQ (A Tribe Called Quest) tribute project called "LowEndYall:ATributeCalledQuest". Who wouldn't enjoy being a part of a tribute project to one of the most influential groups in hip hop today, A Tribe Called Quest.

Check out the ATCQ tribute project and FlamesYall's many other projects at http://flamesyall.bandcamp.com. Will hopefully be other collaborations with this dope producer in the near future, as well.

Subwoofer Science collabs: EROX

Subwoofer Science has been featured on several collaborative projects since releasing our own material. Raleigh, NC's EROX hit us up to be featured on his predominantly instrumental project, "The Genesis". The project also featured contributions from a dope Canadian MC named Sha Prince on "Mos High". The project can be downloaded in it's entirety at http://gravitymovement.bandcamp.com/album/the-genesis

Our contribution, "GRACE" can be heard by following this link:

Subwoofer Science "On Love"

Valentine's Day 2010:
Subwoofer Science released a collaborative project where the three of us submitted beats or songs that had to do with some aspect of "love". It started out as a contest submission that we were going to participate in (with a visual element courtesy of one of Boom88's friends) but we never completed the visual part. The concept was to create a track divided into 3 parts but all on the same theme. "You Know What Love Is..." became the first experimental track and was added as the last track on our EP.

I suggested extending the concept to include more tracks. Since it was my idea to extend it into it's own little project, Ryan and Boom agreed to give creative control over to me and sent me their contributions. When it was finished, the one 3-part track on knowing what love was became three more 3-part tracks on knowing what love ain't, what it could be and what it wouldn't be. An innovative concept where we all delved into different aspects of love, falling in and out, building self-esteem, learning to grow from hurt and moving on in the form of instrumentals and songs that we've created individually. This of course, was an attempt to showcase more of the variety that makes up Subwoofer Science since the three of us are aspiring producers as well as lyricists. It is my hope that we'll continue this same trend on other topics one day.

auDiBLe-INTEGRITY presents "A Wintry Mix"

January 2010:
Winter/Christmas season was upon us and I felt inspired to put out a project sampling some of my favorite Christmas season songs. The DC area had been hit with a blizzard a couple weeks prior to the new year and was about to be hit again unbeknownst to us living there and in the surrounding areas. In a rush to try to put it out on Christmas day (poor planning), made a number of themed instrumentals and asked Ryan Lucas to contribute some vocals on one of the beats. At the last minute, I asked my man, EROX (who featured us on his beat project, The Genesis later on) to contribute some rhymes as well. Because I didn't plan ahead like I should have, I wasn't able to release it on Christmas, but I did manage to put it out on New Years Day (1/1/10).

If you take a listen, you'll hear me ranting on the season and what it means to me, you'll hear some familiar samples from Christmas favorites and you'll hear some dope lyricism as well. I've thought about extending the concept to make it something where I cover all of the Earth's seasons. That may happen, but only with better planning this time... LOL.

Subwoofer Science EP

Ryan Lucas, Boom88 and myself got together for the first time summer '08 after I returned to the DC area from living in Atlanta. Ryan and Boom were already several songs deep in their own collaborations when I came by one of their sessions trying to get some beats on whatever project they were working on. Following that session, I insisted that we become a crew and start really pushing this thing, hence Subwoofer Science was born. Boom88 came up with the dope name, combining a love for music and sound (Subwoofer) with promoting intelligent lyricism and positive growth (Science). A little less than a year late, we would compile several of our best tracks into an EP to offer as a free download and CD. November 2009, we would eventually re-release it as a 10-track EP on Bandcamp with some added collaborations and an experimental instrumental project that we all contributed to as producers (innovation).

Still thinking about doing a couple music videos for some of the tracks on this joint despite it's age...

Ryan Lucas, "onetwenty" instrumental LP

One of the most productive members of Subwoofer Science, Ryan Lucas, being the innovator that he is, decided to do a "beat dump"; basically gathering up a bunch of unused beats from his vast collection and offering them as a free download. The result was named "onetwenty"; I still don't think I quite captured what Ryan was trying to do with the cover art but he said that he liked it. Sometimes that's really all that matters...

If you really want to know what the project is all about, hit him up.

A quick rundown...

It wouldn't be right if I didn't begin this blog by posting some material that I've had a hand in making, be it as a lyricist or as a producer, or both. I mentioned that I'm in two hip hop groups based in the DC metro area, DPA and Subwoofer Science. The latter has been the most active in recent years. The group is comprised of my cousin, Julian Weaver (aka Boom88) and my good friend, Ryan Singletary (aka Ryan Lucas). Boom88 and Ryan Lucas were already 5-6 (maybe more) songs deep on their own material when I moved back to the DC area from Atlanta. My initial intention was to place a few beats on whatever project they were working on and maybe get a vocal guest spot somewhere; nothing serious.

I can't remember if it was the very first or second session that we had but during one of those sessions, I created "Concrete Memories" (track 2 on the Subwoofer Science EP). I think that's when we realized the level of chemistry that was taking place. I text messaged them later on that night, "That's it. We need to become crew." Subwoofer Science was born... months later, we would put out a 6 track EP of our songs then re-release it as a 10-track EP in the fall of '09. Ryan Lucas also dropped an instrumental LP around that same time called "one:twenty". January 2010, I squeezed out a 9 track (mostly) instrumental concept album called "A Wintry Mix" sampling some favorite Christmas/Winter-themed songs. Ryan Lucas and my man, EROX from Raleigh NC laced the two guest spots on the project. Valentine's Day 2010, we dropped a collaborative project where all 3 of us contributed beats or songs that we produced that covered some aspect of love. This project was called "On Love".

Welcome to The DEEPER Experience

Welcome, welcome, welcome... my name is Zyrus Campbell, also known within my small circle of artists as z1 thaESSENTIAL. I am an aspiring hip hop recording artist and producer, member of two DC/MD-based hip hop crews, Subwoofer Science and DPA. Born and raised in Silver Spring MD, what I consider to be the mid-point between Baltimore and Washington, DC, and what others (especially in the mid-90's burgeoning DC hip hop scene) have coined as the "Middle East" since the DC metropolitan area is situated smack-dab in the middle of New York and eveything south of Atlanta.

My passions are music (esp. underground hip hop/soul, instrumental projects and oldies), graphic and web design/development (something I've been doing professionally for over 10 years at this point), family, faith, technology, basketball (playing... not watching) and urban apparel. I intend to use this blog to post things in these areas and at times give my own opinion. I may sometimes delve into politics but as I'm not completely astute in law and governance, that won't be too often.

"The DEEPER Experience" is a term that I coined back in the mid-90's with my cousin in the group DPA. I named the Maxell 90 min tape that we created and passed around to friends and strangers, "Tha DPA ik'spir'e@ns presents I.V.C.". At the time, my cousin's stage name was I.V.C. (as in, Invincible Vincent Campbell) and I handled the majority of the production on the project (mostly him doing freestyles over my beats). Since then, he's changed his name to GreyMatter. You will learn more about him in the future. The thing I told myself was, that if I ever started a label, it would be called "The Deeper Experience" because that was what I felt was happening to me when I was really feeling a song, beit the melody, the harmonics, the lyrics, the presence of the artist on the song... it wasn't just a song or a piece of art, there was an intrinsic quality to it that I had yet to define and my goal was to spend my life pursuing and enhancing it. To this day, I judge a lot of my beats based on 'feeling' instead of how comparable it is to top selling music. There's something deeper in the music, it's been around for years and I'm on to it.

Eventually, we made ourselves known as simply DPA (we've yet to figure out if it's an acronym with meaning or just the pronunciation of "deeper"). So, in essence, this blog is an extension of this movement available via the Internet. Whether or not it actually becomes a real label, we shall see... all the motivation is there.

I will go into greater detail about the various projects that I've done as a lyricist and a producer as well as with DPA and Subwoofer Science. I just wanted to take some time to introduce myself and this new blog that I've created. I hope you enjoy.
